On behalf of K+S Kali GmbH, THYSSEN SCHACHTBAU carried out a complex exploration drilling at the Siegmundshall plant near Wunstorf between 2007 and 2010. The objective was to investigate potential expansion options for the existing mining operation. The project included the execution of a deep large-diameter borehole with a final diameter of 1,500 mm and a final depth of over 700 m. A specially developed drilling method with a rotating cutting head was used, adapted to the specific geological conditions of potash mining. The measure served as preparation for a potential shaft sinking and provided key insights into deposit extension, rock behavior, and hydrogeological conditions. In addition to the drilling execution, THYSSEN SCHACHTBAU was responsible for the overall technical concept as well as planning and documentation.
