Tunnel Ground Freezing at Bern Main Station

For the underground expansion of Bern railway station, an access tunnel was planned through water-bearing, unstable unconsolidated ground beneath active railway tracks. To enable conventional mining advance, THYSSEN SCHACHTBAU was commissioned to carry out a complex ground-freezing operation. The work included horizontal directional drilling over 2,600 m in extremely confined conditions, the operation of a 1,000 kW freezing plant, and continuous monitoring of ground temperatures via an online platform using fiber-optic measurement technology. The execution took place parallel to ongoing station operations and under highly demanding logistical conditions.
