As part of the closure of decommissioned hard coal mines operated by RAG, Herne, from deposits that have in some cases been exploited for centuries along the Rhine and Ruhr, in the Saar region, and near Ibbenbüren, one of the primary tasks is the systematic collection and management of the mine water that continues to accumulate in the old coal mines. This is intended to prevent the migration of mine water into currently active production operations and, after the closure of all hard coal mines, to enable further utilization of the mine water or its discharge into river drainage systems.
